Exercise 6: Meeting the guardian spirit
This exercise can be performed in any outdoor space, but is especially useful in sacred sites. It can also be used to journey to a sacred site at a distance, so long as you know what it looks like in good detail. If you are performing this from a distance it will be more effective if you have visited the place physically, and even better if you have told the spirits there you will visit in this way. But it is still useful to enable you to visit a site you have never been to before, and is a good way to make an initial contact.
If you are looking to contact the guardian of a barrow, stone circle, or other enclosed space, begin your journey just outside the space, so you look ahead to it and enter in, where appropriate.
First, if you are doing this at home, you may wish to create your own sacred space, and/or cast a circle. Then sitting comfortably, take three slow deep breaths, and begin to draw energy up from the deep earth, using the tree posture (see exercise 1: the tree posture). Visualise yourself growing a tail or roots, which extends deep into the heart of the earth itself. With every out-breath, your roots go deeper and with every in-breath, draw the energy up into your body, like warm golden light. Gradually raise your arms, to hold the energy around your head, before gently lowering your arms again so as to be comfortable.
Next visualise before you two oak trees, with a simple path between them, leading to the sacred enclosureâ¦Take a moment to stand at the threshold, and ask aloud that you may meet the guardian of this place, in kinship. Also ask any guides and allies that you have to accompany you.
Follow the path, and take your time to look around you. Are there any differences between the site in the mortal realm and here, seen in spirit? Ahead of you the site comes clearly into view, and a being stands at its entrance. They may be of any form. How do they appear to you? Approach them slowly and greet them respectfully. As you draw near, a gift for them may appear in your hands, which you may give to them.
Pay attention to their response, and to the behaviour of your guides and allies. Is it appropriate to continue? If not thank them and ask if you may come again. Wait a moment for their reply, and return along the path back between the oak trees and back to your body.
If it is OK to continue, you may ask the guardian some questions, and they may also question you. In time, see if you have permission to enter the enclosure. You may ask the guardian what sort of activities take place there. What was its original purpose? Has its purpose changed over time? What is the best way to work with this site? Are there rules and
